Our society used to hate fat, now it seems to be falling back in love with it. Unfortunately, all this going back and forth may be leaving you more confused than ever.
To further complicate the situation, some fitness experts are giving out dangerous advice on how you should be eating fat.
So, without further ado, here is a concise guide to fat:
1. Primary roles: With regards to weight loss, the main roles of dietary fat are the production of fat burning hormones and the production of satiety hormones after eating. In addition, fat helps keep your cell’s membrane healthy and keeps your nervous system healthy.
2. Misconceptions: A current trend that is extreme unhealthy is the endless consumption of fish oil pills. Anything in excess is bad for you, and fish oil is no exception here. So make sure you never have more than 1 gram a day.
3. Dangers of having too much: The biggest danger of having too much dietary fat is caloric overload. Since fat has twice the amount of calories compared to protein and carbs, it’s much easier to overeat with fat. Moreover, dietary fat sources don’t occupy much volume. Thus, it’s harder to feel full when eating fat.
4. What happens when you have too little: Unfortunately, having too little fat because of its caloric density will backfire very harshly. Not only will hunger levels go up, but you will produce less fat burning hormones. Even worse, your cells will have a harder time absorbing carbohydrates.
5. A good amount to have: Don’t obsess too much over perfect dieting, but aim for about one third of your calories as being fat calories. At this level, you leave enough room for carbohydrates and protein while maximizing the benefits of dietary fat.
Eating fat the right way shouldn’t be complicated. Try to get your fat from a wide variety of sources and don’t overdose on omega-3 fats, saturated fats or trans fats. And make sure you act on this information!
